And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. 18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. 19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near unto the ship; and they were afraid. 20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. 21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land wither they went. Five Thousand men with full bellies, all Jews, all concerned about Israel’s condition under Rome, are thinking, This is the Prophet. The Prophet of whom they’re speaking is, of course, the one whose coming was prophesied all through the Old Testament. So they came. And when Jesus perceived that they would take Him by force to make him a king, he departed into a mountain alone.
배가 부른 오천 명의 남자들(모두 유대인)은 로마 정권하의 이스라엘의 상태에 마음을 쓰며 생각합니다.
'이 분이 그 선지자다. 구약 전체를 통해 오신다고 예언된, 모두가 말하고 있는 그 선지자이다.'
그래서 그들이 이 자리에 온 것입니다.
그들이 억지로 그 분을 왕으로 삼으려는 것을 인지하시고 예수님은 그들을 떠나 홀로 산으로 가십니다.
They wanted this man to be king; he could supply all their needs and feed all of their bellies. Remember that all of these men were now full. In another place Scripture says they had been following the Lord for some three days and were hungry. But now they’re walking away literally stuffed. And they’re saying, “This is the Prophet. He can do miracles. Let’s make Him king.” 그들은 이 분이 왕이 되시기를 원했습니다; 그 분이 그들의 배를 채우시며 그들의 모든 필요를 공급해 주실 수 있으리라 믿었지요.
지금 그들 모두가 배불러 있다고 한 말씀을 기억하시기 바랍니다.

But consider this: even though Jesus was to be the prophesied King, His immediate reason for being here was to be the prophesied sacrifice! Jesus was the sacrifice before He was the King. He was the Savior before He was the Lord. Of course He’s always been the Lord, but He didn’t come as Lord. He came to serve.

He said, "You call me Lord and Master, and you say well, because I really am. But, I am among you as one that serves." He came to give His life a ransom for many. It wasn’t yet time to be king. It was time for sacrifice. So the Lord Jesus hid Himself. He went up into a mountain alone.
그 분은, "너희가 나를 주와 선생이라 잘도 부른다.
내가 바로 그렇기 때문이다.
그러나 나는 섬기는 자로 너희 가운데 있다."라고 말씀하셨습니다.
그 분은 많은 사람들을 속죄하기 위해 그 분의 생명을 주시러 오셨습니다.
아직은 왕으로 오신 것이 아니었습니다.
희생이 되시기 위한 때였던 것입니다.

We’ve said this before, If Jesus had become king, we would have experienced that wonderful kingdom spoken of in Isaiah. "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them." [i]
전에 언급한대로, 만약 예수님이 바로 왕이 되셨더라면 이사야에서 말씀하신 대로 그 놀라운 경험을 했었을 것입니다.

The lions would be lying down with the calves and the wolves with the lambs. There would be no poisonous snakes or threat of war. That would be wonderful. However, the problem would be that all the people in that kingdom would still be sons of Adam, born in sin. Therefore they would have perhaps lived to a ripe old age and then died and gone to hell because the sacrifice had never been made; sin had never been dealt with; death had never been conquered. So they would have lived in the kingdom of God while on earth, and then spent eternity in the lake of fire.
사자들이 자기 새끼들과 누우며 늑대들이 어린 양들과 누웠을 것입니다.
더이상 독뱀도 없을 것이며 전쟁의 두렴도 없을 것입니다.
정말 그러면 얼마나 좋겠습니까?
그러나 문제는 그 왕국의 백성들이 여전히 죄 가운데서 잉태되는 아당의 자손들이었을 것입니다.
희생양이 드려지지 않았기 때문에 그 백성들은 결국 늙게 되고 죽게 되며 죽어서 지옥에 가야 했을 것입니다;
죄의 문제가 결코 다뤄지지 않고 주검은 결코 정복되지 않았었을 것입니다.

The Lord didn’t come for that. He wasn’t concerned primarily about our full bellies. Oh, He’s concerned about that, but those are secondary things, saints. God is concerned about our eternal life. Jesus will be crowned King at His Second Coming, not His first. His first coming was as the Lamb. The next time round He’ll come as the Lion of Judah and sit on the throne of David. He’ll then be King. And you know what? These same people who wanted him to be king then won’t like it. When Jesus does reign we’re going to have a beautiful, wonderful world for a thousand years. But as soon as there’s opportunity to rebel, the whole world, apart from those whose names are written in the Book of Life, will rebel against the righteous government of God.
주님은 그것을 위해 오신 것이 아닙니다.

When Jesus therefore saw that they would make him king, He hid Himself.

Now I want to read a portion of the same story from Matthew 14. All of the authors of the four gospels wrote from a different angle, for a different reason. I always marvel that John left this out of his narrative, because I think this is one of the most spectacular things that happened in the New Testament.
이번에는 같은 내용을 마 14장에서 보도록 하겠습니다.
4 복음서의 저자들은 서로 다른 각도에서, 다른 이유를 위해 썼습니다.

And on the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit. And they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spoke unto them, saying, Be of good cheer, it is I. Be not afraid. And Peter answered and said to him, Lord if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. And when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and beginning to sink, he cried, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught him, and said unto him, Oh thou of little faith. Wherefore didst thou doubt. And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. And then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth, thou art the Son of God.” [i]
즉시 예수님께서 자기 제자들을 강권하사 자기가 무리를 보내는 동안 배를 타고 자기보다 앞서 건너편으로 가게 하시고
무리를 보내신 뒤에 기도하러 따로 산에 올라가셨다가 저녁이 되매 거기 홀로 계시더라.

That’s pretty dramatic, don’t you think? This is the fourth watch of the night. The first watch would be six to nine, the second watch nine to midnight, the third watch midnight till three o’clock in the morning. So it is sometime after three a.m. and they’ve been struggling for a long time. They have rowed their boat three or four miles in that stormy sea, and by now they are pretty frustrated. It is a dark night; the wind is strong and contrary. Suddenly there appears a ghostly figure walking on the waves.
매우 드라마틱하다고 생각지 않으십니까?
이것은 밤 4경이었습니다.

What was their reaction? What would yours be? Of course they were terrified, just as you would be. But the Lord calls out to them, "Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid." And Peter said, "If it’s you, Lord, bid me come walking on the water."
그들의 반응은 어떠했겠습니까? 여러분이라면 어떻게 했겠습니까?
물론 그들은 여러분과 마찬가지로 공포에 떨었을 겁니다.
그러나 주님은 그들에게 외치십니다.
"힘을 내라; 나다; 두려워 말아라."

Peter was no fool; we can learn something from him. He wasn’t about to step out of that boat to drown himself; which is what would have been the result if he had acted presumptuously without hearing from the Lord. But if the Lord said, "Come," he was willing to obey.
베드로는 바보가 아니었습니다.
우리는 그로 부터 뭔가를 배울 수 있습니다.

I’ve heard people laugh at Peter’s little faith. I don’t see Peter quite that way. I see Peter here as a remarkable example of what it means to walk the Christian life. First of all, he did not step out of the boat until he had a word from the Lord.

Christians, like everyone else, are capable of doing stupid things; and people criticize them for it. If they presumptuously do stupid things, then they deserve to be criticized for their stupidity. But if they do seemingly stupid things at the command of the Lord, like Peter did, then it is obedience and becomes a triumph of faith.
다른 모든 사람과 마찬가지로 그리스도인들은 바보 같은 일들을 할 수 있습니다;
그리고 사람들은 그것으로 인해 그들을 비판합니다.

Obviously, Peter's faith was too little in the face of the terrifying circumstances in which he found himself; but his faith was great compared to those he walked among, and probably compared to most of us. Other than the Lord Jesus Christ, who ever walked on water? So that’s not small faith. But the problem was that it was Peter’s faith in Christ. Let me explain that.
분명 베드로의 믿음은 자신을 발견하고 만 그 무서운 환경의 면전에서는 매우 작았지만 그와 함께 했던 다른 사람들이나 우리 대부분에 비하면 그의 믿음은 위대했던 것입니다.
예수님을 제외하고 그 누가 물 위를 걸었겠습니까?

As in Peter's case, your faith in Christ is not sufficient to keep you afloat. That may be a shocker to some of you. But here is the fact: It’s Christ’s faith in you that keeps you afloat. That does not mean that Christ has a lot of confidence in you. It means what the apostle Paul explained in Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
베드로의 경우와 같이 그리스도 안에 있는 여러분의 믿음은 여러분을 계속 물 위에 떠 있게 하는데 충분치 못하다는 것입니다.
이것은 여러분 중 어떤 사람들에겐 매우 깜짝 놀라게 하는 말이 될 줄 압니다.
그러나 이것이 사실입니다:
여러분을 떠 있게 유지시켜 주는 것은 여러분 속에 계신 그리스도의 믿음입니다.

Saints, hear this. God has given us all a measure of faith. When we hear the Gospel, our faith is directed toward Christ. When we place our faith in Christ, He comes into our lives; [i] and with Him comes His divine nature, [ii] His faith. From that point on, it’s Christ that lives in us, both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Christ in you is your hope of glory. When Christ comes into us, if we will submit to Him, it’s the exercise of His faith in our flesh that causes us to do the will of God continually.
성도 여러분, 이것을 들으십시요.
하나님은 우리 모두에게 믿음의 분량을 주셨습니다.
우리가 복음을 들을 때 우리의 믿음은 그리스도를 향해 인도됩니다.
그리스도 안에 우리의 믿음을 놓을 때 그 분은 우리 삶에 들어 오시고(골 1:27), 그분과 함께 그분의 신성이 들어 오시며(벧후 1:4), 그분의 믿음이 들어 오는 것입니다.

여러분 안에 계신 그리스도가 여러분의 영광의 소망이십니다.
그리스도께서 우리 안에 오시고, 우리가 그 분께 순복하면, 우리의 육 안에서 그 분의 믿음이 역사하여 우리가 하나님의 뜻을 계속적으로 행하도록 해 주시는 것입니다.
That’s the marvelous illustration here. Peter’s faith in Christ was enough to cause him to obey, but it was Jesus’ faith that caused him to walk on the water successfully after his faith proved insufficient. You can see Peter sinking and crying out, "Lord, help!" And the Lord reaches down to lift Peter from the peril of his circumstance to carry him in His arms on the sea. It was by the faith of Jesus Christ, not Peter's faith, that he returned safely to the ship. And in John's gospel the Scripture says that when Jesus entered the ship, immediately they were at their destination.

Looking at verse 21 of our text, we read, "Then they willingly received Him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land wither they went."
본문의 21절을 보며 우리는, "이에 그들이 그분을 반가이 배로 영접하니 배는 곧 그들이 가려던 뭍에 이르렀더라" 라고 읽는 것입니다.
My next question is, "What is our objective? What is our destination? Where do we think we’re going? How important is what we’re doing?"
저의 다음 질문은, "무엇이 우리의 목표인가? 무엇이 우리의 목적지인가? 우리가 가고 있는 곳은 어디라 생각하는가? 우리가 무엇을 하고 있는 것이 얼마나 중요한가?" 하는 것입니다.
I was impressed as I read this: they willingly received Him, and immediately they were at their destination. I made a little note to myself in the margin of my Bible. It reads, "Jesus’ presence is our destination." That’s what we’re after. It’s not some great objective. Yes, there are great objectives, and we’ll reach them; but that’s not today's destination. Our destination today is the abiding presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in our ship. And if we're walking in the fullness of Christ, our destination and arrival, are His business, not ours.

He didn’t say we would drown. He said, let us go over to the other side. These disciples were on the course of obedience when circumstances overtook them. But Jesus’ presence was the shield their faith could rest in. Circumstances beyond our control are in His control. When we walk in obedience, even though our faith is weak, we will get to the other side in spite of overwhelming obstacles. Even when our faith is far too weak to overcome them, the faith of Jesus Christ is absolutely sufficient in every circumstance. The presence of the Lord will get us through.
그 분은 우리가 물에 빠질 거라 말씀하시지 않았습니다.

이 제자들은 환경이 그들을 엄몰하기까지는 순종 노선에 있었습니다.
그러나 예수님의 임재는 그들의 믿음이 안식할 수 있는 방패였습니다.
우리가 통제하기 벅찬 환경은 그분의 통제 안에 있는 것입니다.
우리가 순종의 길을 걸을 때, 우리의 믿음이 약하다 할지라도, 압도적인 장애물들에도 불구하고 우리는 건너편으로 가게 될 것입니다.
우리의 믿음이 그 장애물들을 극복하기에 너무 약할지라도 예수 그리스도의 믿음이 모든 환경 가운데서 분명코 충분합니다.
주님의 임재가 우리로 꿰뚫고 나가게 할 것입니다.
Some people would make us think that we are remiss if we don’t worry about things. Saints, you’re not remiss if you don’t worry. You’re remiss if you’re not obedient to what God tells you to do. Don’t worry about the waves or getting in over your head. Instead, try being obedient. The Lord is going to take care of the other things.
어떤 사람들은 우리가 일들을 염려하지 않으면 무책임한 것이라 생각하게 만듭니다.
하나님께서 여러분에게 하라고 말씀하신 것들을 순종하지 않는다면 그것이 무책임한 것입니다.
파도를 두려워 한다거나 머리가 터지겠다고 하지 마십시요.
그대신 순종하려 하십시요.
주님께서 파생되는 일들을 돌봐 주실 것입니다.
I guarantee from my experience that you are going to be in some kind of trouble as you walk along and obey the Lord. You’re going to have some major problems to face. Some of them are going to be brought about as a result of your obedience to the Lord. It may even seem that the Lord has forsaken you; he’s not even in the boat. But I promise you, He is on the lake.
저의 경험으로 장담하건데 주를 순종하며 걸어갈 때 어떤 종류의 문제 안에 봉착할 것입니다.
극복해야 할 아주 중대한 문제들도 맞게 될 것입니다.
그 중 어떤 것들은 여러분이 주님께 순종한 결과로 인해 초래될 것입니다.
주님이 여러분을 버리신 것 같기도 할 것이고 심지어는 그 분께서 배 안에 계시지도 않습니다.
그러나 저는 약속합니다. 그 분은 호수에 계십니다.
You have to recognize that whatever you’re into, saints, the Lord’s into it with you, especially if you got there by obeying Him. He said, "I’ll never leave you nor forsake you." And the testimony of the saints is unwavering steadfastness; an unchanging demeanor even when it is dark and it seems the Lord has not come.
성도 여러분, 깨달으셔야 할 것은 여러분이 어디에 빠져 있든지 주님은 여러분과 함께 그 속에 계십니다.
특히 여러분이 그 분을 순종해서 그 곳에 봉착하여 있다면 말입니다.
그 분께서 말씀하십니다. "내가 너를 절대로 떠나지 않고 버리지 않겠노라."
그리고 성도들의 간증은 요동치 않는 확고 부동함이며, 어둠침침할 때나 주님이 아직 오시지 않은 것과 같을 때도 바뀌지 않는 모습입니다.
I didn’t comment on that verse, “And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.” How many times have we experienced that? It’s now dark and I can't see the Lord anywhere. Job said something about that. He said, I look before me, and it’s dark; I can’t see the light. I look behind me, and it’s dark; I can’t see the light. I look to my left and my right and I can’t see the Lord. Job couldn't see the Lord, but in the next verses he said that he was confident the Lord was working and that He would bring him forth as gold.[i]
그 구절에 부연 설명하지 않겠습니다.
"이제 어둑해졌고, 예수님은 그들에게 와 계시지 않았으니"
이런 상황을 경험했던 것이 몇 번인가?
지금은 어둡고 예수님은 어디에도 보이시지 않는다.
욥이 그것에 대해 말했다.
그가 말하기를 내가 앞으로 나아가나 어둡고; 빛을 볼 수 없구나. 뒤로 나아가도 어둡고 그 빛을 볼 수 없구나 왼쪽을 봐도 나의 오른쪽을 봐도 주님을 볼 수가 없구나.
욥은 주님을 볼 수가 없었습니다.
그러나 그 다음 절에서 그는 주님이 역사하셔서 그가 정금같이 되어 나아오리라고 확신합니다.(1)(욥 23:8-12)
Saints, our testimony isn’t the miraculous. It might include that sometime; but our testimony is our abiding obvious confidence in the Lord and in His everlasting promises. The Lord is present and you can trust Him. We need to walk that way. That’s our testimony. When our confidence is overwhelmed by the severity of our circumstances, the faith of Jesus Christ is sufficient to cause us to triumph.
성도 여러분, 우리의 간증은 기적을 행하는 것이 아닙니다.
어떤 때는 그것을 포함하기도 하지만, 우리의 간증은 주님과 그 분의 영원한 약속 안에 분명한 신뢰를 두고 거하는 것입니다.
주님은 현존하시며 여러분은 그 분을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
우리는 그 길을 갈 필요가 있습니다.
그것이 우리의 간증입니다.
우리의 신뢰가 지나치게 극심한 환경에 의해 압도되면, 예수 그리스도의 믿음이 우리를 승리로 이끄는데 충분하게 할 것입니다.
