1. 1st posting, intro to Romans 12, 7-9-09

로마서 12장을 들어가며, 2009년 7월 9일.



2. One of the most simple, and at the same time most profound, statements in scripture is John 3:15, “that whosoever believeth in him (Jesus) should not perish, but have eternal life.”

성경에서 가장 간단하면서도 심오한 의미를 지닌 구절을 찾자면 요한복음 3장 15절입니다. “이는 저를 믿는 자마다 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라 (개역한글)”

3. That is very simple, but what does it mean?

간단한 구절입니다만 어떤 의미일까요?



4. Does it mean that when we were born- again we started a new life that will go on forever, as though it started in 2009 and will never end? It means more than that.

거듭난 후에는 새로운 생명(life)이 시작되고 영원히 계속된다는, 예를 들어 2009년에 시작하였다면 이후로는 끝이 없는 삶, 단순히 그런 의미만은 아닙니다. 



 5. “ETERNAL’ has no beginning and no end.

‘영원’이란 말은 시작이 없으며 끝도 없다는 뜻입니다.



6. The life that we received when we were saved is the life of the Lord Jesus, which is the life of the Word of God which liveth and abideth forever.

우리가 거듭나면서 받은 것은 예수그리스도의 생명입니다. 살아 있고 항상 있는 하나님의 말씀의 생명이기도 합니다.



7. He was before all things and by him all things consist.

말씀은 창세전부터 존재하였고 만물을 창조하였습니다.



8. That is the life that was made flesh and dwelt among us, The Lord Jesus Christ.

말씀은 곧 생명 (life)이고 곧 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 계셨던 예수 그리스도입니다.



9. The Bible tells us that now “Christ in us is our hope of Glory.” We are told that “Christ is our life.”

예수 그리스도는 “영광의 소망”되신다고 성경이 말하고 있지요. 그리고 “그리스도는 우리 생명”이라는 말을 듣습니다.



10. John the apostle told us that “he that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.”

사도 가운데 요한은 “아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라” 라고 말합니다.



 11. What do all these things tell us? That the life we have is eternal because it is the life of Christ.

이런 구절들을 통해 무엇을 알 수 있습니까? 우리가 가진 생명은 영원하다는 것과 왜냐하면 예수 그리스도의 생명이기 때문이라는 사실입니다.

12. We also have another life, the life of our flesh.

우리에게는 또 하나의 생명이 있습니다. 육신의 생명이지요.



 13. It started the day we were born and will end on this earth when we die.

우리가 태어나는 날 시작되었고 우리가 죽는 날 이 지구상에서 끝이 납니다. 
 


14. So there are, in a sense, two lives that compete with each other, the Spirit and the flesh; Eternal life and the life of  the flesh.

따라서 두 가지 생명이 서로 경쟁하는 구도입니다. 영과 육, 영원한 생명과 육신의 생명.

15. In This diagram we have two men, A and B.

위 그림에는 A와 B 라는 두 사람이 있습니다.



16. We will assume that both claim to be born again.
 
두 사람 모두 구원받은 사람이라고 칩시다.



17. The attention of man A is fixed on the carnal life.

A는 육신의 생명에 초점이 맞추어져 있습니다.



18.  Man B is pursuing the life that is eternal.
 
B는 영원한 생명을 붙좇는 사람입니다.



19. Take a good look at this diagram and keep it in mind as you read on.

이 그림을 염두에 두고 다음 글을 읽어보십시오.

20. Eternal Life is eternal. Its venue is eternity.

영생은 영원한 것에 가치를 둔 생명입니다.



21. Carnal life is temporal, of short duration. Its venue is time.

육신의 생명은 일시적이며 짧고 시간의 제약을 받습니다.

22. Eternal life is the life of Christ.

영원한 생명은 곧 예수 그리스도의 생명입니다.



23. When we are born-again of the Spirit we enter into that life that has existed eternally.

그리고 성령으로 거듭난다는 것은 이미 존재하는 영원한 생명에 우리가 들어가는 것입니다.



24. It doesn’t begin with us. It doesn’t start the day that we are saved; it is eternal, without beginning or end. It is not about us.

우리로부터 시작되는 게 아니며 구원받는 날부터 시작하는 것도 아닙니다. 시작도 끝도 없습니다. 우리와는 무관한 생명입니다.



25. We cannot make ourselves more or less important––more or less significant––than what God sees us to be in Christ.

하나님이 그리스도 안에서 우리를 향한 뜻이 있으실 터인데, 우리의 노력으로 더 크고 중요한 사람이 되는 것이 아닙니다.



26. Apart from Jesus Christ, there are no big names in the kingdom of God.

하나님의 나라에서는 예수 그리스도를 제외하고는 아무도 큰 자가 없습니다.



27. He places us in the body as it has pleased him, and we are gifted according to his will; that is not our choice.

하나님이 기뻐하시는 데로 우리에게 육신이 주어졌고, 하나님이 원하시는 데로 은사가 주어졌습니다. 우리가 결정한 것이 아닙니다.



28. We cannot decide to be what he has not prescribed; and we cannot rise above or fall below where he has ordained us to be in his eternal designation.

하나님이 지으신 것이지 우리가 한 것이 아니며, 하나님이 영원한 계획이 있었고, 우리는 계획의 일부로 지어졌으며, 정하신 이상으로 크게 되거나 비천해지거나 할 수가 없습니다.



29. On the other hand, the life of the flesh is here for a moment and then vanishes away.

이와는 대조적으로 육신의 생명은 잠깐 있는 것이며 사라지는 것입니다.



 30. The flesh has attributes that the eternal Spirit does not have. They are like mutations that are deceptive, debilitating, and destructive;

육신의 생명은 영원한 생명에는 없는 성질을 가지고 있습니다. 마치 돌연변이와 같아서 속이고, 훼방하고, 파괴합니다.



31. things that cannot survive in the kingdom of God because they are temporal and defiled.

이러한 성질은 잠깐 있다 가는 것이요 가증한 것이어서 하나님의 나라에서는 용납되지 않습니다.



32. And yet they are things that tempt and are attractive to every man––even Christians––

하지만 사람은 이것들로 시험받고 유혹받습니다. 그리스도인들도 마찬가지입니다.



33. and they are tools that Satan uses to make us ineffective in the kingdom of God while making us appear very effective by this world’s standards.

그리고 사단은 이를 통해 우리가 하나님의 나라에서는 작아지고 세상의 기준으로는 커지도록 만듭니다. 



34. These things are fame, fortune, “success” in men’s eyes, pride, power, influence, etc.

사단의 도구는 바로 명성, 돈, 사람의 눈에 비친 “성공”, 자랑, 힘, 권세 등입니다. 
 


35. These are all summed up in what the apostle described as “all that is in the world; the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life. These are not of the Father, but of the world.”

사도 요한은 이들을 한데 모아 “세상에 있는 모든 것이 육신의 정욕과 안목의 정욕과 이생의 자랑이니 다 아버지께로 좇아 온 것이 아니요 세상으로 좇아 온 것”이라 하였습니다.

36. The context in which these exist is business, religion, entertainment, politics, sports and any other venue the world provides. These are all here for a moment, and then they will vanish away.

사단의 도구는 경제, 종교, 연예, 정치, 스포츠 등 세상의 모든 영역에서 중요하게 생각되는 가치이며, 잠시는 있지만 언젠가 사라질 것들입니다.

37. The things that are important in eternal life are things pertaining to the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith meekness and temperance. These are eternal, and reap eternal reward.

영원한 생명에서 중요한 항목은 성령에 속하는 것들입니다. 사람, 기쁨, 평화, 오래 참음, 온유함, 착함, 믿음 구함, 절제 등입니다. 이들은 영원한 가치이며, 이를 통해 영원한 열매를 얻습니다.



38. The expectations of those who walk after the Spirit are that “God keeps the books and will reward according to faithfulness” to him and to his word, not by any other measure.

성령을 따르는 자들은 하나님이 보시는 믿음의 정도를 따라 상을 받게 됩니다. 믿음 외의 다른 척도는 없습니다.
 


39. The things that are important in the temporal (carnal) life are the things that belong to the flesh: reputation, recognition, power, and material possessions, and whatever pertains to those goals.

육신의 생명에게 중요한 것은 육신에 속한 가치입니다. 명성, 이름높임, 권세, 다(多)소유, 그리고 이러한 가치를 얻기 위한 모든 수단입니다.



40. But these are temporal, and so are their benefits.

하지만 이 모든 것의 이익은 일시적입니다.



41. The expectations of those who walk after the flesh are: remuneration, praise, honor, position, which all add up to “success” in the world’s eyes.

육신을 따르는 자는 보상받고, 칭찬받고, 존중받고, 높은 위치에 서는 것을 원합니다. 세상의 눈으로 보았을 때 성공이라 칭하는 가치들입니다.



42. This would translate into measurable equations: How much, how many, how far, etc.  That’s how the world measures things; how much money? How many people? How far does my influence extend? etc.

이러한 가치는 얼마나 크게, 얼마나 많이, 얼마나 높이 등 양적으로 표현할 수 있습니다. 이는 세상의 판단 기준입니다. 얼마나 많은 돈을 가졌나? 얼마나 많은 사람이 따르는가? 내 영향력은 얼마나 멀리까지 미치는가? 
 


43. If we live the carnal life, we have to please everyone, at least a constituency.

육신의 생명에 속한 자는 사람을 기쁘게 해야 합니다. 적어도 자신을 따르는 사람들에 대해서는 그러합니다.



44. We have to impress or dominate those from whom our expectations will be met.

추종자들의 마음을 사거나 복종시켜야 합니다. 그래야만 육신이 중요하게 여기는 가치를 얻을 수 있습니다.



45. We must attract those who will serve our agenda

원하는 목표를 같이 추구할 추종자를 모아야만 가능한 일입니다.

46. Living eternal life is simple. We only have to please one master, God. We only look for one reward, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

영원한 생명에 거한다는 것은 간단합니다. 한 분만 기쁘게 하면 됩니다. 주님을 기쁘게 하고 “잘 하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아”라는 말을 들으면 됩니다.

47. “But,” you may ask, “are Christians not in all of the venues mentioned: business, religion, politics, sports, etc.?

위에서 언급한 경제, 종교, 정치, 스포츠 등의 영역에 그리스도인이 포함되지 않고 살아가는 것은 불가능하다고 생각하는 사람도 있을 것입니다.



48. Christians are in all those places, but with entirely different motives, and operating in a totally different manner.

그리스도인은 세상 사람들과 같은 영역에서 살아가지만 전혀 다른 동기를 가지고 전혀 다른 방식으로 살아가는 사람들입니다.

49. We will continue this discussion in the next posting.  In the meantime, read Romans 12 and familiarize yourself with all that the apostle Paul said there.
