4.      마침 유대인의 명절인 유월절이 가까운지라

5.      예수께서 눈을 들어 큰 무리가 자기에게로 오는 것을 보시고 빌립에게 이르시되 우리가 어디서 떡을 사서 이 사람들로 먹게 하겠느냐 하시니

6.      이렇게 말슴하심은 친히 어떻게 하실 것을 아시고 빌립을 시험코자 하심이라

7.      빌립이 대답하되 각 사람으로 조금씩 받게 할지라도 이백 데나리온의 떡이 부족하리이다

8.      제자 중 하나 곧 시몬 베드로의 형제 안드레가 예수께 여짜오되

9.      여기 한 아이가 있어 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가졌나이다 그러나 그것이 이 많은 사람에게 얼마나 되겠삽나이까

10.   예수께서 가라사대 이 사람들로 앉게 하라 하신대 그 곳에 잔디가 많은지라 사람들이 앉으니 수효가 오천쯤 되더라

11.   예수께서 떡을 가져 축사하신 후에 앉은 자들에게 나눠 주시고 고기도 그렇게 저희의 원대로 주시다

12.   저희가 배부른 후에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 남은 조각거두고 버리는 것이 없게 하라 하시므로

13.   이에 거두니 보리떡 다섯 개로 먹고 남은 조각이 열 두 바구니에 찼더라

14.   그 사람들이 예수의 행하신 이 표적을 보고 말하되 이는 참으로 세상에 오실 그 선자자라 하더라

There are two parts to this chapter. The first 21 verses are typical. Pictures are being drawn here, types and shadows that portray doctrinal truth. The last 50 verses are doctrinal. Here we're going to deal with the first fourteen verses of this chapter––the feeding of the five thousand––where Jesus is demonstrating an eternal truth for us.

After what things?

This story is a continuance of what we learned in chapter five, in which, you will remember, He had done and said some marvelous things. At the Pool of Bethesda He had met and healed on the Sabbath a man who was crippled. That had created controversy with the Pharisees. Jesus had told them clearly that He was the Son of God, and they had accused Him of making himself equal with God, and set about to kill Him.

“그 후에 예수께서 갈릴리 바다 건너편으로 가시매”

어떤 일 이후를 말하는 것입니까?

It was after that exchange that He took a boat and went over the Sea of Galilee, which is Tiberias and a great multitude followed Him because they saw His miracles. And Jesus went up into a mountain. And there He sat with His disciples.

이 논쟁 이후에 예수님께서 배를 타고 갈릴리 바다 곧 디베랴 바다 건너편으로 건너가셨고, 큰 무리가 예수님께서 행하신 표적을 보고 그를 따랐습니다. 그리고 예수님께서는 산에 오르셨고, 제자들과 함께 거기에 앉으셨습니다.

But, when Jesus then lifted up His eyes and saw a great company come unto Him, He said to Philip, “Where are we going to buy enough bread to feed all of these people?" This He said to prove Philip; Jesus knew what he was going to do.

그러나 예수님께서 그의 눈을 들어 큰 무리가 자기에게 나아오는 것을 보시고, 빌립에게 “이 모든 사람을 먹일만한 충분한 떡을 어디에서 사겠느냐?”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이것은 빌립을 시험코자 하심이었습니다. 그리고 예수님은 당신께서 무엇을 하실지 알고 계셨습니다.

Do you think the Lord ever does that to us?  Do you think He tests us?  Has he ever tested you?  Have you ever come to the conclusion that you were in real trouble because you didn’t have enough money, or enough of whatever it was you thought you needed?  Did it occur to you that when these things happen to us the Lord is checking us out like He was checking Philip out?  Do you think there ever has been an occasion when the Lord didn’t know beforehand exactly what He was going to do? See what it says: “This He said to prove him, for He himself knew what He was going to do.”

예수님께서 여러분에게도 이와 같은 일을 하신다고 생각하십니까? 예수님께서 우리를 시험하실까요? 예수님께서 여러분을 한 번이라도 시험하신 적이 있으십니까? 여러분이 돈이 부족하거나, 혹은 여러분이 필요하다고 생각한 무엇인가가 부족해서 큰 문제가 봉착했다는 결론에 다다른 적이 있습니까? 이런 일들이 여러분에게 일어났을 때, 예수님께서 빌립을 시험하셨던 것처럼 여러분을 시험하신다는 생각이 들었습니까? 예수님께서 당신이 정확히 무엇을 하실지 미리 알지 못하는 경우가 한 번이라도 있었다고 생각하십니까? 성경은 무엇이라고 말하는지 봅시다. “이렇게 말씀하심은 친히 어떻게 하실 것을 아시고 빌립을 시험코자 하심이라”

In the margin of my Bible I have written to myself the question, Did Jesus see the solution before the problem? What do you think; does He ever see the solution to the problem?  Do you think He always sees the solution to the problem?  If so, how come we get worried about things?  Why would you be concerned at the time of your next problem if you honestly believe––and you have attested to it today––that the Lord always has the solution for the problem?

Sometimes we don’t like the solution. That’s where submission comes in. Are we willing to submit to His solutions? We see here, clearly stated, that the Lord has the solution in hand before the problem arises. We need to keep that in mind. That’s not just rhetorical doctrine, that’s fact; and we need to walk in that truth.

Philip answered him, "Two hundred penny worth of bread is not sufficient for them that every one of them may take a little."

What is two hundred penny worth? Assuming, as it seems, a penny is a day's wages, It's like two thirds of a year’s earnings. That’s probably what they had in the kitty. I wonder if they didn’t open the bag and say," Uh, we’ve got thirty-four dollars here to feed five thousand men plus their women and children. How are we going to do that?

Look at the confidence Philip had about feeding these people. He said, two hundred penny worth of bread is not sufficient that every one of them may take a little. We can go and spend all this money and buy only enough bread for some of them to have perhaps a bite.

빌립이 사람들을 먹이는 것에 대해 가지고 있는 자신감을 보시기 바랍니다. 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. 각 사람으로 조금씩 받게 할지라도 이백 데나리온의 떡이 부족하리이다. 우리가 가서 이 돈 모두를 쓰더라도 이들 중 몇몇이 한 입정도 먹을 수 있는 양의 빵 밖에 살 수 없습니다.

Now one of His disciples, Andrew, Peter’s brother, said to Him, "There’s a lad here, and he has five barley loaves."

이제 제자 중의 하나인 시몬 베드로의 형제 안드레가 예수님께 말했습니다. “여기 한 아이가 있어 보리떡 다섯 개를 가졌나이다.”

The fact that the loaves were specified to be barley caught my attention as I was studying this. Why does it specify barley loaves? So I looked up meal offerings. Thank offerings were of barley meal. These five loaves probably were not baked with the idea of being a thank offering, but they were the right ingredients in the right place at the right time.

이 장을 공부하면서 떡의 종류가 보리떡으로 자세히 나와있다는 사실이 제 관심을 끌었습니다. 왜 보리떡을 자세히 기록했을까요? 그래서 저는 소제(meal offering)를 찾아보았습니다. 감사제(thank offering)는 보리로 드려졌습니다. 이 떡 다섯 개가 아마 감사제를 드리려는 생각으로 만들어진 것은 아니겠지만 여하튼 그들은 적절한 재료로, 적절한 시간에 적절한 장소에 있었습니다.

The Lord took them, and these five barley loaves became an offering to the Lord. He lifted them to the Father, thanked Him for them, blessed them, and He broke them.

주님께서 떡을 가지셨고, 이 보리떡 다섯 개가 주님께 제물로 드려졌습니다. 예수님은 떡을 아버지께 올렸고, 떡을 인해 감사를 드렸으며, 축사하시고, 그것을 나눠주셨습니다.

It seems to me the point of this whole thing is that the Lord took what was offered to Him and it was going to be enough. Think about that. When you have what God has provided for whatever situation you are in, you have enough. God’s provision is always enough. He is able to expand it if necessary.

Years ago, before we started the rescue mission in Eugene, Oregon, we––my mother, my brother and I––went to visit an old couple who had been with my brother in a missionary training program years before. They had a real burden for Eugene, especially for the transients––the street people and the hoboes. It was through them that the Lord directed me to start the mission.

They were very poor, but they insisted that we stay for lunch. The dear lady looked in her refrigerator and all she had were three little bowls of leftover stuff. She said, "Let’s bless it and the Lord will make it go round."

그들은 매우 가난했지만 저희에게 점심을 먹고 가라며 간곡히 이야기 했습니다. 이 마음씨 고운 자매님이 냉장고를 들여다 보았는데, 그녀가 가진 것이라곤 먹다 남은 음식 세 그릇뿐이었습니다. 그녀가 말하길, “여기에 축사합시다, 주님께서 모두에게 돌아갈 수 있도록 하실 거에요.”

So we sat down and we ate and talked and we talked more and we ate more. When we finished eating, we had all had enough. Then she scraped together the leftovers, put it back in a bowl and I saw her put back in the refrigerator, I’m sure, just about as much as she took out.

그래서 저희는 자리에 앉아, 이야기를 시작했고, 먹기 시작했습니다. 그리고 계속해서 이야기를 나누었고, 계속해서 먹었습니다. 저희가 식사를 마쳤을 때는 모두가 충분히 먹게 되었습니다. 그리곤 그 자매님이 먹고 남은 음식을 모아 그릇에 담았습니다. 그리고 확신하건대 저는 그녀가 처음 꺼냈을 때와 거의 같은 양을 다시 냉장고 안에 넣는 것을 보았습니다.

That was a lesson for me. I thought, Wow! This is true!  The Lord really multiplies the loaves and fishes. I've thought about that often. My conclusion? What God gives us is enough!

이 일이 저에게 큰 교훈이 되었습니다. 저는 “와! 이게 진짜구나!”라는 생각을 했습니다. 주님께서는 정말로 떡과 물고기를 풍성하게 만드셨습니다. 저는 이 일에 대해서 자주 생각합니다. 제 결론이 무엇이냐고요? 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 것은 충분합니다!

The Lord wants us to rest in Him. Often we’re upset because we don’t have a lot of stuff.  Well, saints, we’ve got everything we need. Of course we can't say, I’m on vacation now; because I’m a Christian I don’t have to work anymore or be productive, God will feed me.

주님께서는 우리가 그의 안에서 안식하기를 원하십니다. 우리는 종종 무언가를 많이 갖고 있지 않아서 마음이 불편하게 됩니다. 그러나 성도 여러분, 우리는 우리가 필요한 모든 것을 가졌습니다. 물론 우리가 “나는 지금은 휴가 중이야. 나는 그리스도인이니까 더 이상 일 할 필요도 없고, 생산적일 필요도 없어. 하나님께서 먹여 살리실 거야.”라고 말할 수는 없습니다.

I think that would be stupid. The Lord has made us to be a productive people. Even those in Ephesians chapter four, who had been thieves before they were saved, were instructed to work with their hands the thing which is good. Why? So that they would have enough for themselves?  No, so that they would have to give to him that needeth.

저는 이것이 미련한 일이라고 생각합니다. 주님께서는 우리를 생산적인 사람들로 만드셨습니다. 에베소서 4장에서는 구원받기 이전에 도둑질하던 사람들조차 제 손으로 수고하고 선한 일을 하라고 가르침을 받았습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 그렇게 해서 그들 스스로 넉넉히 가지기 위해서요? 아닙니다. 그렇게 해서 빈궁한 자에게 구제할 것이 있게 하기 위해서 입니다.

There’s an expanded view of productivity in the Christian walk. One of the things we’re told not to do is worry about our food and clothing. If we’re worrying about how we’re going to survive day by day, we’re no different than the world. That’s the world’s philosophy, not the Christian’s.

그리스도인의 삶에서 생산성에 있어서는 더 넒은 관점이 있습니다. 우리가 하지 말 것으로 가르침을 받은 것 중 하나는 우리 먹을 것과 입을 것에 대한 걱정입니다. 만약 우리가 매일 어떻게 살아갈 것인지 걱정한다면, 우리와 세상은 다를 것이 없습니다. 이것은 세상의 사고방식이지 그리스도인의 사고방식은 아닙니다.

This lad had five barley loaves and he gave them to the Lord. They literally became a thank offering and the Lord multiplied them for the needs of perhaps fifteen thousand people, if we count the women and children who may have been there along with the men.

이 아이는 보리떡 다섯 개를 가지고 있었고, 이것을 주님께 드렸습니다. 그것은 말 그대로 감사제가 되었고, 남자들과 함께 있었을 여자들과 아이들의 수까지 센다면 아마도 만 오천 명쯤 되는 사람들의 필요를 위해 주님은 그것을 풍성하게 하셨습니다.

Notice that Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to the people. We’ve been studying in our training session classes about discipleship, about faithfulness, and teaching faithful men to teach others. We see an example here. The loaves and fishes represent the Word of God. We’re not absorbing information for ourselves only, but also for those we’re ministering to. So Jesus gave to the disciples, and the disciples gave to all of those who were waiting to hear; or in this particular case, waiting to eat.  So they were all fed.

예수님께서 떡을 가지셨고, 축사하셨을 때, 제자들에게 나누어 주셨으며, 제자들은 사람들에게 나누어 준 사실을 잘 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 저희는 선교 훈련 수업에서 제자됨과 신실함, 그리고 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있는 충성된 사람들을 가르치는 부분에 대해 공부하고 있습니다. 여기에서 예를 볼 수 있습니다. 떡과 물고기는 하나님의 말씀을 나타냅니다. 우리는 단지 우리 자신을 위해서만이 아니라 우리가 섬기는 다른 사람들을 위해서 정보를 흡수합니다. 그래서 예수님께서는 제자들에게 주셨고, 제자들은 듣기를 기다리는 모든 사람들에게 전해주었습니다. 여기에서는 먹기를 기다리는 사람들이겠군요. 어찌되었든 그들은 모두 배부르게 먹었습니다.

Verse twelve says, “When they were filled," Philip, looking at his resources, had worried about everyone having a little. He hadn’t been thinking big enough. After Jesus broke the bread, He gave to the disciples, and they passed it out to the people.

12절에는 “저희가 배부른 후에”라고 기록하고 있습니다. 빌립이 자신의 가진 것을 보았을 때, 그는 각 사람이 조금씩 받을 것을 걱정했습니다. 그는 큰 풍성함에 대해 생각지 못했습니다. 예수님께서 떡을 나누어 제자들에게 주셨고, 제자들은 사람들에게 그것을 전해주었습니다.

Imagine their awe that this thing was growing by the minute. All they began with was a handful. Pretty soon each disciple had a handful to give to the people. And they were able to return for more handfuls to feed that crowd. I imagine they thought, Where is all this bread and fish coming from?  Well, it was coming from the multiplication of what had been given to the Lord.

떡이 시시각각 늘어가는 것을 보았을 제자들의 두려움을 상상해보십시오. 그들은 나눠주기 시작할 때 가진 것은 한 움큼이 전부였습니다. 그러나 곧 각 제자들이 사람들에게 나누어 줄 한 움큼씩을 가지게 되었습니다. 그리고 그들은 무리를 먹일 수 있는 더 많은 움큼을 가지고 돌아갈 수 있었습니다. 저는 제자들이 “도대체 어디서 이 떡과 물고기가 나오는 거야?”라고 생각했으리라 상상합니다. 그것들은 예수님께 드려진 것을 축사한 데서 나왔습니다.

Second Corinthians 9:10 tells us that the Lord multiplies the seed sown. Let me illustrate: Suppose I brought home a hundred pound sack of wheat and Darlene should grind it all and make bread. It would obviously last quite a while, but, even so, one day Darlene would say, we’re out of flour again. So I’d go and buy another sack of wheat. But this time we take fifty pounds and plant it in the field.

고린도후서 9장 10절은 주님께서 너희 심을 것을 풍성하게 하신다고 말합니다. 여기서 예를 들도록 하겠습니다. 제가 45Kg 들이 밀 부대를 들고 집으로 간다고 생각해보십시오. 달린(역: 딕 형제님 아내)이 그것을 빻아서 빵을 만듭니다. 분명히 꽤 얼마 동안 그것을 먹을 수 있을 겁니다. 그러나 그렇다고 해도 어느 날 달린이 밀가루가 떨어졌다고 말하게 될 겁니다. 그래서 제가 다시 가서 다른 밀 부대를 삽니다. 하지만 이번에는 22Kg을 가지고 땅에다가 심었습니다.

So what happens?  By the time we finish consuming the fifty pounds we made into flour, the seed we planted has brought forth fifteen sacks of wheat.

그래서 무슨 일이 일어났을까요? 우리가 빵을 만든 22Kg의 밀을 다 먹었을 즈음, 우리가 심었던 씨앗에서 밀 15 부대를 수확할 수 있게 되었습니다.

Question!  Did the Lord multiply the seed sown; or the seed consumed? This is always true. The Lord multiplies the seed sown. And those loaves and fishes were sown when they were placed in the Lord's hands.

여기서 질문을 드리겠습니다. 주님께서 심을 것을 풍성하게 하셨나요? 아니면 먹을 것을 풍성하게 하셨나요? 이것은 항상 진리입니다. 주님께서는 심을 것을 풍성하게 하십니다. 떡과 물고기가 주님의 손에 들어갔을 때 그것들은 땅에 심기운 것입니다.

All who comprised that multitude were filled. They didn't just have a little, they had enough––more than enough. And He said unto his disciples, "Gather up the fragments."  So the result of Jesus’ provision was far greater than the vision of the disciples. The disciples were thinking, in their natural way, about how they could get just a little food to all these people. But Jesus, in His abundance, provided for them until they were filled and running over.

그 무리를 구성하고 있던 모든 이들이 배불리 먹었습니다. 그들은 조금씩 받은 것이 아니라 배불리 먹었습니다—배불리 먹은 것 이상으로요. 그리고 예수님께서 제자들에게 “남은 조각을 거두라”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님께서 주신 음식의 결과는 제자들이 생각한 것 훨씬 이상이었습니다. 제자들은 그들의 자연스러운 방법대로 그 모든 사람들에게 어떻게 조금씩 받게 할지 생각했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그의 풍성하심에 따라 그들이 배부르고 넘칠 때까지 공급하셨습니다.

The disciples were responsible for obedience. That’s all. God makes the multiplication. If they relied on their faith, nothing would have multiplied. What was true of them is true of us. We don’t have it in us. But we can be obedient. That’s all that God requires of us.

제자들은 순종해야 했습니다. 그것이 다입니다. 하나님께서 풍성하도록 만드십니다. 그들이 자신의 믿음에 의지하고 있을 때는 어떤 것도 풍성하게 되지 않았을 것입니다. 그들에게 진리였던 것은 우리에게도 진리입니다. 우리는 우리 안에 능력을 가지고 있지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 순종할 수 있습니다. 이것이 하나님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 전부입니다.

I think the disciples had a great ministry passing on what Jesus multiplied. The Lord is telling us something, saints. No wonder we can be free to do what God calls us to do, because the Lord already has in hand all of the needed solutions. If I'm a believer, but I don’t believe that, I'm impaired. But the Scriptures say, “Though we believe not, yet he abides faithful, He cannot deny himself.”  Saints, faith is believing that God can’t fail even though my faith is overwhelmed by the circumstances that confront me.

저는 제자들이 예수님께서 풍성하게 하신 것을 전하는 굉장한 사역을 했다고 생각합니다. 성도 여러분, 주님께서 우리에게 무엇인가 말씀하고 계십니다. 하나님께서 우리들이 하도록 하신 일을 자유롭게 하는 데 이상할 것이 없습니다. 왜냐하면 주님께서 이미 필요한 해결책들은 손에 쥐고 계시기 때문입니다. 제가 믿는 사람임에도 불구하고 이 사실을 믿지 않는다면 저는 장애를 가진 것과 마찬가지입니다. 그러나 성경은 “우리는 미쁨이 없을지라도 주는 일향 미쁘시니 자기를 부인하실 수 없으시리라”라고 말하고 있습니다. 성도 여러분, 믿음은 나의 믿음이 내가 마주한 형편에 압도당할지라도 하나님은 실패하실 수 없음을 믿는 것입니다.

It's a great problem when the saints expect God to do only what they can understand. In verse fourteen we read that when those men had seen the miracle that Jesus did, they said, “Of a truth this is that prophet that should come.” They were not impressed simply because they were fed, but because they were fed by a miracle.

성도들이 하나님께서 자신이 이해할 수 있는 것만을 하실 것이라고 생각하는 것은 큰 문제입니다. 14절에서 우리는 그 사람들이 예수님께서 행하신 표적을 보고 “이는 참으로 세상에 오실 그 선자자라”고 말한 것을 읽을 수 있습니다. 그들은 단순히 배부르게 먹어서 놀란 것이 아니었습니다. 그들이 표적으로 배불렀기 때문이었습니다.

People are not convinced to believe Jesus just because of what we do. They are convinced because they see what Jesus does. It may not always be as spectacular as the feeding of the five thousand, but it is always obvious when it is of Him and not of us. Paul said it this way. "Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us." He does the work; we are the instruments.

사람들이 우리들이 하는 것을 보고 예수님을 믿게 되는 것이 아닙니다. 그들은 예수님께서 하신 일을 보고 믿게 됩니다. 그 일이 항상 오천 명을 먹이는 일만큼 놀라운 일이 아닐지라도 우리에게서 나온 것이 아니라 주님에게서 나온 것이라면 항상 명백합니다. 바울은 이를 다음과 같이 표현했습니다. “우리 가운데서 역사하시는 능력대로 우리의 온갖 구하는 것이나 생각하는 것에 더 넘치도록 능히 하실 이에게.” 주님은 일을 합니다. 그리고 우리는 그 도구입니다.
