Concerning home churches

Question: Is it possible to gather as a home church without being affiliated with any denomination? Then, does God work on this church as he does on others? How can we serve the Lord in this church setting?
Answer: Two things that are not evident in the New Testament are 1. Church buildings and 2. Denominations. Both of these have become traditions (and often detrimental) to the function of New Testament principles.

Most of the churches mentioned in New Testament epistles are located in someone¡¯s home. (Romans 16: 5) And it seems evident that they met also in synagogues and in one instance in a college, so obviously it is not a law that churches must meet in homes.

Specially designed church buildings, however, were unknown to the churches to whom the epistles were written; and yet it was in these epistles that church order is set forth. Obviously, then, anything that the church is told to practice can be practiced in a home setting.

In the first few days after Pentecost in Acts 2-5 there were perhaps 8000 people in the church, but they were soon meeting from house to house. It is evident that this huge church filtered out into many small congregations. Today, the measure of a successful ¡°church¡± is how big it is. But the larger the congregation, the more difficult it is to practice biblical church order, and the less likely that it will comprise true disciples of the Lord Jesus.

Denominations, or the spirit that divides the church into denominations, was considered to be a problem detrimental to the spiritual well-being of the church.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians about this very matter (1 Corinthians 1-3). In that letter Paul asks, ¡°Is Christ divided?¡±(1 Corinthians 1: 9-15). To the Ephesians Paul wrote, ¡°There is one body, and one Spirit¡¦one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.¡±

Denominations are with us to stay: but that is not the biblical norm; it is a problem that we must not promote.

We must recognize all who are truly born-again of the Spirit of God as being the one church: the denominations that divide us are impairments to God¡¯s working among us. Anyone can join a denomination whether he is saved or not; but only those who are saved are members of the body of Christ, and they are instructed to follow Jesus, not men, and the word of God, not traditions.
