Why did God allow women to be oppressed as He put them in a weaker and lower position?

After Eve had been deceived by the serpent and Adam had deliberately disobeyed God¡¯s command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, God pronounced upon Adam and Eve and the serpent what would be the consequence of their choices.

Unto the woman he said, ¡°I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.¡± Genesis 3:16

¶Ç ¿©ÀÚ¿¡°Ô À̸£½ÃµÇ ¡°³»°¡ ³×°Ô À×ÅÂÇÏ´Â °íÅëÀ» Å©°Ô ´õÇϸ®´Ï ³×°¡ ¼ö°íÇÏ°í ÀÚ½ÄÀ» ³ºÀ» °ÍÀÌ¸ç ³Ê´Â ³²ÆíÀ» »ç¸ðÇÏ°í ³²ÆíÀº ³Ê¸¦ ´Ù½º¸± °ÍÀ̴϶ó ÇÏ½Ã°í¡± â¼¼±â 3:16



It is often misunderstood that this verse is what authorizes the statements made in the New Testament that ¡°The husband is the head of the wife¡¦¡±
(Ephesians 5:23). That is not the case. This word that God spoke to Eve is prophetic, forecasting the result of their disobedience.

I have underlined two phrases that are directly relevant to the reader¡¯s question:

1. ¡°Thy desire shall be to thy husband.¡± In Genesis 1:27,28 we are told that God created man in his own image, that he created them male and female and commissioned them to fill the earth. That is a comprehensive, general statement, a synopsis of the event. In chapter two we are told the details. In God¡¯s order, Adam had been created first and placed in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:8,15). He was the only human being on the earth at that time, and God observed that ¡°it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make an help meet for him;¡±(Genesis 2:18) after which God brought all of the animals to Adam to see what he would call them. ¡°And Adam gave names to all¡¦ but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him¡± (Genesis 2:20). So God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, took one of his ribs and of the rib made a woman, and brought her to Adam. Then God called their name Adam (Genesis 5:2). They were one. They were both in the image of God. They were both led by the Spirit, and neither of them had any agenda but to prove (demonstrate) the good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). Adam was led by the Spirit of God, as was Eve. There was no need, or even thought, of human authoritarianism; Adam¡¯s desire was to God, and Eve¡¯s desire was to God. The coordination was therefore flawless and the relationship perfect; Adam was the head––the commissioned one––and Eve a help, meet (perfectly suited) for him. But when Adam¡¯s disobedience occasioned sin and spiritual death, their relationship with God was broken and they were immediately adrift and without a head. Now Eve would no longer look to God, but her desire would be to her husband, to whom she would now look for direction. She, after all, was of his body, and was made to be his help.

¡°He shall rule over thee.¡± This is not a positive statement; it is a dire prophecy of the consequence of her sin. Since the fall, when sin began to rule in the deceitful heart of men, women have suffered humiliation, subservience, subjugation and abuse; in some cultures they are bought and sold as chattel. In reaction, where it has been possible, women have rebelled and established themselves as men¡¯s competitors, resulting in the dissolution of marriages, the breaking of homes and the fulfillment of other prophecies describing the end times, and defined generally as ¡°feminism¡±. The only place where the proper, God-given relationship exists is where the gospel has gone, and where the people willingly obey the word of God and are led by the Spirit of God. The roles of men and women are different, but not unequal.

Ephesians 5: 22-33 describes the biblical relationship of husband and wife. The husband is the head of the wife, even as (in the same way that) Christ is the head of the church (which is his body (Ephesians 1: 22,23)). He therefore is to love his wife in the same way that Christ loves his church. There is no tyranny there; no authoritarianism or harshness: only a sacrificial love that guarantees her safety and security. The wife is to submit to her husband as unto the Lord. As in the case of Eve before the fall, her conscious submission was to the Lord, and as a result her relationship to Adam was as the Lord had ordained. It is to the Lord that both husband and wife are to submit. When this happens, their relationship will be what is described in this Ephesians passage. The Bible does not endorse tyranny by men over women, but God will bless men and women according to how well they fill the role to which God has assigned them. Jesus Christ is Lord of all.
