When Adam was created, he bore the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Then he sinned by his own disobedience and, in a very real sense, declared his independence from God (Genesis 3:4,5). In the meantime, however, until men receive the gospel, and submit to Jesus Christ as Lord, because of their fallen nature, they can do nothing but sin; and that is what they are judged for. And that’s what Paul meant in Romans 5:12 when he said, “And so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned.” So the fact is that men today are judged for their sin, not Adam’s: but the reason they sin is because Adam introduced the nature of sin into his offspring.
