목사, 장로 직함에 대한 질문
I read your reply on how a "pastor" is not a title or position but a gift from God. What about and elder or a deacon? Is it a title/position or a gift from God? Is it biblical to have sisters as deacons? The reason I ask is because many "churches" have sisters that are deacons. I know you are very busy but I would appreciate your response. Thank you.

The Title “Pastor” has become so common in the church that it has taken on a significance that is not appropriate. Titles within the church congregation have worked to the detriment of the spiritual health of the saints––not in every case, but in general––because they have legitimatized the unbiblical division between “clergy” and “laity.” Jesus warned us of that in Matthew 23. Those who exercise authority in the local assembly are “Elders” or bishops.(1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1: 5-9) who Paul described as “overseers” (Acts 20:28) and he warned them that after his departure some of them would rise up to gain followers of themselves (which obviously was a bad thing).

When Paul wrote his letters to the churches he always addressed them to the “saints,” not to the “pastors”. His exhortation to ministry was always to the saints (Ephesians 4:12-16)––every member, every part, every joint. When he wrote to the church at Philippi, he addressed the letter “to the saints at Philippi with the bishops and deacons”. There is no mention of “pastors” because anyone with that gift, or any other gift was simply a saint in the congregation of saints. The bishops or elders were the overseers, and they were always plural in number. The reason for that, I’m sure, was so that they were all accountable. Everyone, including the individual elders, was under the authority and oversight of the other elders. There was no head but Jesus.

The word “pastor” appears only once in the English New Testament. The Greek word from which it is translated (poimen) appears 18 times in the New Testament. three of those times it refers to the Lord Jesus himself, who is the great shepherd of the sheep (the church), and14 times it refers to people who attend livestock;. In each of those cases it is translated as “shepherd.” Once, in Ephesians 4: 11, it is translated “pastor,” in which case it is specified to be a “gift”, along with apostles, prophets, evangelists and teachers. Each of these gifts has very recognizable characteristics, and each one is important to the body of Christ, but they are gifts, not offices.

In the local assembly, these gifts function for the edifying of the members of the body, but they function under the oversight of bishops or “elders.” Those elders, however, are not lords over the flock (1 Peter 5:1-3) but examples. What gift an elder should have is not specified, nor is his education or his charisma a qualification. As you read in the Timothy and Titus passages, his qualifications are his spiritual maturity, his godly character, his age, his reputation, his marriage and his family.

Beside Elders, the other office in the church is “Deacon.” Some churches appoint women as deacons. However, the apostle Paul specified in the list of qualifications in Titus and Timothy that a deacon should be the husband of one wife, which would seem to exclude women from the office. However, since deacon means “servant”, and there are many women who provide admirable and important service to the body of Christ, they are, in that sense, deacons. But the “office” of deacon is occupied by those who meet the specifications that Paul listed in his instructions to both Timothy and Titus.
